TOTAL POPULATION AND GROWTH
The total population of Malaysia, according to the 2009 Census, was 28.3 million compared to 23.7 million in 2000 thus giving an average annual population growth rate of 4.4% over the 2000-2009. Selangor had the highest growth rate of 6.1% for the period 2000-2009.

POPULATION DISTRIBUTION

In terms of population distribution by state in Census 2009, Selangor was the most populous state (5.18 million). Their share of the total population of Malaysia was 18.3%.

URBANIZATION

With respect to urbanization, it was observed that the proportion of urban population had increased to 62.5% in Census 2009 from 62.0% in 2000. States with very high proportion of urban population in Census 2009 were Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur (100%), and followed by Selangor (87.8%).

ECONOMY
The economy of Selangor is constituted by a progressive market economy. The core sectors of Selangor's economy are commerce and agriculture.

Selangor is the richest state in the country in terms of gross domestic product (GDP) per capita (PPP), which stood at USD 33,147 in 2008, comparable to the nominal per capita values of Western Europe and Hong Kong. On 27 August 2005, Selangor was officially declared the first developed state in Malaysia by the then state government. In 2008, the state recorded a Human Development Index of 0.907 - a figure comparable to modern advanced economies such as Germany, the United Kingdom and South Korea.
